The iPhone iPod application also has "shuffle" and "repeat" modes, as well as an explicit "shuffle" action on lists. However, the method to activate them is more subtle, and the icons that indicate you are in shuffle or repeat mode are not always on the screen.
In fact, the icons and the buttons to turn on these modes are the same thing. To turn these modes on or off, or to see if the modes are on or off, tap the album art on the Now Playing screen to bring up the "scrubber" (the position indicator/widget). The repeat indicator/button is to the left of the scrubber, and the shuffle indicator/button is to the right.

Thanks for telling about it! It is RIDICULOUSLY inconvenient and counter-intuitive. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to disable it.
Most useful bog ever - I spent the last two weeks wanting to inflict harm on an Apple engineer because my iPhone was stuck in shuffle mode.
Okay, so my shuffle arrows are white... and I'm still getting shuffled. More than that, it's not shuffling among the songs on a single album but among every album on the phone. Help??

I have an iPhone 3Gs, but when I am using the iPod in shuffle mode there is NO indication to the left or right of the scrubber. How do I get the shuffle indication to show up?
I have 1023 songs currently, but some have never played and others have played several times. Therefore, I don't think that it is "shuffling" properly. I would like it to do a better job so that ALL songs are in the SHUFFLE.
Any help?
